A Prayer for Deliverance from the Wicked
3How long, LORD, shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked glory? z Pss 13, 2; 75, 5; Jer 12, 1 . 4How long will they mouth haughty speeches, go on boasting, all these evildoers? a Ps 73; Mal 2, 17; 3, 14 . 5They crush your people, LORD, torment your very own. 6They kill the widow and alien; the fatherless they murder. b Ex 22, 21–22; Dt 24, 17–22 . 7They say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob takes no notice.” c Pss 10, 11; 64, 6; 73, 11; Jb 22, 13–14; Ez 9, 9 .
8Understand, you stupid people! You fools, when will you be wise? d Prv 1, 22; 8, 5 . 9Does the one who shaped the ear not hear? The one who formed the eye not see? e Ex 4, 11; Prv 20, 12 . 10Does the one who guides nations not rebuke? The one who teaches humans not have knowledge? 11The LORD does know human plans; they are only puffs of air. f Ps 33, 15; 1 Cor 3, 20 .
12Happy those whom you guide, LORD, g Ps 119, 71; Jb 5, 17 . whom you teach by your instruction. 13You give them rest from evil days, while a pit is being dug for the wicked. 14You, LORD, will not forsake your people, nor abandon your very own. h 1 Sm 12, 22; Sir 47, 22 . 15Judgment shall again be just, and all the upright of heart will follow it.
16Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will stand up for me against evildoers? 17If the LORD were not my help, I would long have been silent in the grave. i Ps 115, 17 . 18When I say, “My foot is slipping,” your love, LORD, holds me up. j Ps 145, 14 . 19When cares increase within me, your comfort gives me joy.
20Can unjust judges be your allies, those who create burdens in the name of law, 21Those who conspire against the just and condemn the innocent to death? 22No, the LORD is my secure height, my God, the rock where I find refuge, 23Who will turn back their evil upon them k Pss 7, 16; 9, 16; 35, 8; 57, 7; Prv 26, 27; Eccl 10, 8; Sir 27, 26 . and destroy them for their wickedness. Surely the LORD our God will destroy them! l Ps 107, 42 .
