Fragments of Gospels on Papyrus
J. K. Elliott
In addition to quotations from lost gospels in the testimony of church fathers, in recent years papyrus fragments of non‐canonical works have been discovered, most notably at Oxyrhynchus. In some cases (e.g. P. Oxy. 1, P. Oxy. 654, P. Oxy. 655) these are likely to be from the Gospel of Thomas (q.v.). In other cases (e.g. the Merton papyrus) it is not certain if we are dealing with a fragment of an apocryphal gospel. All those that are of a gospel type are included below in the following sequence:
-
1. P. Oxy. 840
-
2. P. Oxy. 1081
-
3. P. Oxy. 1224
-
4. P. Cairensis 10735
-
5. P. Egerton 2
-
6. The Strasbourg Fragment
-
7. P. Berolinensis 11710
-
8. The Fayyum Fragment
-
9. The Merton Fragment
