Peter and Rome

The traditions of Peter's sojourn in Rome and his death there have given rise to a good deal of literature, not least the ancient Pseudo‐Clementines. A. A. de Marco, The Tomb of St Peter (Leiden, 1964) (= Supplements to Novum Testamentum 8), provides a detailed bibliography on these traditions. O. Cullmann, Peter: Disciple, Apostle, Martyr: A Historical and Theological Study (Eng. trans. London, 1953) discusses the tradition in patristic testimony and from archaeological evidence. The following may also be consulted:

  • R. A. Lipsius, Die Quellen der römischen Petrus‐sage kritisch untersucht (Kiel, 1872).

  • A. Penna, S. Pietro (Brescia, 1954) (French trans. by E. Viale and Y. del Pozzo, Saint Pierre (Paris, 1958)). [See especially the Appendix for an analysis of Peter in the apocryphal literature.]

  • E. Dinkler, ‘Die Petrus‐Rom‐Frage’, Theologische Rundschau 25 (1959), 189–230, 289–335; ibid. 27 (1961), 33–64.
