Isaac in fact plays a rather limited role in the biblical narrative, being recalled in particular in the contexts of the testing of Abraham (see above) and Jacob's deceit (see below). But it is noteworthy that he too settled in Gerar and encountered Abimelech, and that he also is associated with the digging (or redigging) of the well at Beer‐sheba and other wells in the neighbourhood (Gen. 26 ). These traditions underline the importance of water‐supplies such as that of Beer‐sheba to those who lived in or journeyed through the arid region of the Negeb.
