Judah

Set within the wider context of the Joseph story is an episode relating to the eponymous ancestor of the tribe of Judah. It tells how Judah failed to fulfil his duty to Tamar, the widow of his eldest son Er, by ensuring that she was able to bear a son by one of Er's brothers, and how she succeeded in seducing him. As a result of this she bore twins, Perez and Zerah (Gen. 38 ), whose names are recorded in Numbers 26: 20–1 as the heads of two important Judahite families (NRSV ‘clans’).
