The Access Bible New Revised Standard Bible, written and edited with first-time Bible readers in mind.

Reading Guide

Song of Solomon is not easy to read: The meanings of many words are unknown; the metaphorical * nature of the language often leaves the referent unclear; and speakers are not clearly marked. One focus for reading is to consider how the author has evoked the feeling of love. How do images of fruit, wine, and flowers allow the lovers to speak provocatively? While the lovers clearly express their affection for one another, they also seem aware of the societal constraints under which they live. What opposition does their love meet and how do they respond? The only references to marriage are a puzzling poem about the wedding procession of King Solomon in 3.6–11 and the woman's description as “bride.” Does this celebration of physical love without focus on marriage or procreation surprise you?
