Epilogue (
21, 1–25
)
This chapter seems to have been added to the Gospel by another hand sometime after its completion (see introduction, p. 1402 ). It elaborates on a tradition of Resurrection appearances in Galilee. The miraculous catch of fish has a parallel in the miracle associated with the calling of Peter in Luke 5, 1–11 . This chapter focuses upon the two heroes from the apostolic age: Peter, who inherited Jesus' role as shepherd, and the Beloved Disciple, who established the Johannine tradition. Peter had died a martyr's death. The Beloved Disciple lived a long time but has also died. Johannine Christians can look back upon that generation of disciples as faithful witnesses to Jesus.
