1 THE youth and the angel left the house together; the dog followed Tobias out and accompanied them. They travelled until night overtook them, and then camped by the river Tigris. 2Tobias went down to bathe his feet in the river, and a huge fish leapt out of the water and tried to swallow his foot. He cried out, 3and the angel said to him, ‘Seize the fish and hold it fast.’ So Tobias caught hold of it and dragged it up on the bank. 4The angel said: ‘Split open the fish and take out its gall, heart, and liver; keep them by you, but throw the guts away; the gall, heart, and liver can be used as remedies.’ 5Tobias split the fish open, and put its gall, heart, and liver on one side. He broiled and ate part of the fish; the rest he salted and kept.

They continued the journey together, and when they came near to Media 6the youth asked the angel: ‘Azarias, my friend, what remedy is there in the fish's heart and liver and in its gall?’ 7He replied: ‘You can use the heart and liver as a fumigation for any man or woman attacked by a demon or evil spirit; the attack will cease, and it will give no further trouble. 8The gall is for anointing a person's eyes when white patches have spread over them; after one has blown on the patches, the eyes will recover.’

9When he had entered Media and was already approaching Ecbatana, 10Raphael said to the youth, ‘Tobias, my friend.’ ‘Yes?’ he replied. Raphael said: ‘We must stay tonight with Raguel, who is a relative of yours. He has a daughter named Sarah, but no other children, neither sons nor daughters. 11You as her next of kin have the right to marry her and inherit her father's property. 12The girl is sensible, brave, and very beautiful indeed, and her father is an honourable man.’ He went on: ‘It is your right to marry her. Be guided by me, my friend; I shall speak to her father this very night and ask him to promise us the girl as your bride, and on our return from Rages we shall celebrate her marriage. I know that Raguel cannot withhold her from you or betroth her to another without incurring the death penalty according to the decree in the book of Moses; and he is aware that his daughter belongs by right to you rather than to any other man. Now be guided by me, my friend; we shall talk about the girl tonight and betroth her to you, and when we return from Rages we shall take her back with us to your home.’

13At this Tobias protested: ‘Azarias, my friend, I have heard she has already been given to seven husbands who died in the bridal chamber; the very night they went into the bridal chamber to her they died. 14A demon kills them, I have been told. And now it is my turn to be afraid; he does her no harm, because he loves her, but he kills any man who tries to come near her. I am my father's only child, and I fear that, were I to die, grief for me would bring my father and mother to their grave; and they have no other son to bury them.’

15Raphael said: ‘But have you forgotten your father's instructions? He told you to take a wife from your father's kindred. Now be guided by me, my friend: marry Sarah, and do not worry about the demon. I am sure that this night she will be given to you as your wife. 16When you enter the bridal chamber, take some of the fish's liver and its heart, and put them on the burning incense. The smell will spread, 17and when it reaches the demon he will make off, never to be seen near her any more. When you are about to go to bed with her, both of you must first stand up and pray, beseeching the Lord of heaven to grant you mercy and protection. Have no fear; she was destined for you before the world was made. You will rescue her and she will go with you. I have no doubt you will have children by her and they will be very dear to you a 6:17 be very dear to you: lit. be like brothers to you. . Now do not worry!’ When Tobias heard what Raphael said, and learnt that Sarah was his kinswoman and of his father's house, he was filled with love for her and set his heart on her.
