1He who fears the Lord will act thus, and if he masters the law, wisdom will be his. 2She will come out to meet him like a mother; she will receive him like a young bride. 3For food she will give him the bread of understanding and for drink the water of wisdom. 4He will lean on her and will not fall, he will rely on her and not be put to shame. 5She will advance him above his neighbours and find words for him when he speaks in the assembly. 6He will be crowned with joy and exultation; lasting renown will be his heritage from her. 7Fools will never possess wisdom, nor will sinners catch a glimpse of her. 8She holds aloof from arrogance; liars never call her to mind.

9Praise is out of place on the lips of a sinner, because it has not come from the Lord; 10for praise is the outward expression of wisdom, and the Lord himself prompts it.

11Do not say, ‘The Lord is to blame for my going astray’; it is for you to avoid what he hates. 12Do not say, ‘It was he who led me into error’; he has no use for a sinner. 13The Lord hates every kind of vice; you cannot love vice and still fear him. 14When in the beginning God created the human race, he left them free to take their own decisions: 15if you choose, you can observe the commandments; you can keep faith if you are so minded. 16He has set before you fire and water: reach out and make your choice. 17Mortals are offered life or death: whichever they prefer will be given them. 18For great is the wisdom of the Lord; he is mighty in power, all-seeing; 19his eyes are on those who fear him; no human action escapes his notice. 20He has commanded no one to be impious; to none has he given licence to sin.
