The Tetrateuch: JEP

Some scholars believe that JE was incorporated into P when P was first composed; others argue that P first existed separately and was combined with JE by a slightly later editor. In either case it is agreed that P material furnishes the organizing structure of the Tetrateuch as we know it. The narrative from creation through the Sinai revelation is organized by genealogies and by periods of history with their special signs and covenants: the covenants with Noah, with Abraham, and with the people at Sinai, and their respective covenantal signs of rainbow, circumcision, and sabbath. The wilderness story is organized around the theme of the first two generations of Israelites, of which the first illustrates disobedience and the second illustrates obedience to God's covenant.
