Text Commentary

And he answered me and said to me with his voice, Hear! 1 and said…Hear: GMQD′ ‘and said to me, 〈and〉 his voice I heard’; U defective; Gk.a ‘and said to me, O upright man! Man of uprightness! Scribe! And his voice I heard’. Do not be afraid, Enoch, you righteous man and scribe of righteousness. 2 righteous…righteousness: Gk.a ‘upright…uprightness’. 2Come hither and hear my voice. And go, say to the Watchers of heaven who sent you 3 Gk.a ‘to those who sent you’. to petition on their behalf, 4 to petition on their behalf: Gk.a om. You ought to petition on behalf of men, not men on behalf of you. 3Why have you left the high, holy and eternal heaven, and lain with the women and become unclean with the daughters of men, and taken wives for yourselves, and done as the sons of the earth and begotten 5 Gk.a add ‘children for yourselves’. giant sons? 4And you were spiritual, holy, living an eternal life, but you became unclean upon the women, 6 upon the women: so Eth., but corrupt for Gk.a ‘through the blood of the women’. and begat children through the blood of flesh, and lusted after the blood of men, and produced flesh and blood as they do 7 and produced…as they do: D′ Gk.a ‘as they produce flesh and blood’. who die and are destroyed. 5And for this reason I gave them wives, namely that they might sow seed in them and that children might be born by them, 8 Gk.a ‘and thus beget children by them’. that thus deeds might be done on the earth. 9 that thus … on the earth: so Eth.II; Eth.I defective and corrupt, but GTUD′ are similar to Gk.a ‘that nothing might be lacking to them on the earth’. 6But you formerly 10 formerly: Gk.a om. were spiritual, living an eternal, immortal life for all the generations of the world. 7For this reason I did not arrange wives for you because 11 because: Gk.a om. the dwelling of the spiritual ones 12 Eth.I Gk.a add ‘of heaven’. is in heaven. 8And now the giants who were born from body and flesh 13 G ‘from souls and flesh’; Q ‘from the spirits of flesh’; D′ Gk.a s ‘from the spirits and flesh’. will be called evil spirits 14 will be called evil spirits: Gk.a defective and reads ‘strong’ for ‘evil’. upon the earth, and on the earth will be their dwelling. 9And evil spirits came out 15 Gk.s ‘And evil spirits they will be, the spirits which have come out’. from their flesh 16 Gk.a ‘from their bodies’ (and so Eth. could also be translated); Gk.s ‘from the bodies of their flesh’. because from above 17 Gk.s ‘from men’. they were created; from the holy Watchers was their origin and first foundation. 18 was their … foundation: Gk.a s ‘was the beginning of their creation and the beginning of their foundation’. Evil spirits they will be on the earth, and spirits of the evil ones 19 they will be … the evil ones: Q Gk.a om. (hmt.); some Eth. MSS read ‘and evil spirits’ for ‘and spirits of the evil ones’. they will be called. 20 and spirits … will be called: Gk.s om. together with verse 10. 10And the dwelling of the spirits of heaven is in heaven, but the dwelling of the spirits of earth, 21 of earth: Gk.a om. who were born on the earth, is on earth. 11And the spirits of the giants † the clouds † which do wrong 22 So Eth.: D′ Gk.a ‘And the spirits of the giants wrong the clouds’; Gk.s ‘The spirits of the giants lay waste, do wrong’. No version is satisfactory, but it is possible that ‘clouds’ in Eth. Gk.a (‘lay waste’ in Gk.s) is a corruption of ‘the Nephilim’, viz. ‘The spirits of the giants, the Nephilim, do wrong’. and are corrupt, 23 GQ Gk.a s ‘and cause corruption’ or ‘and cause destruction’. and attack and fight and break 24 Gk.a s ‘and throw’(?). on the earth, 25 Gk.a adds ‘harsh spirits of giants’. and cause sorrow; 26 Gk.a s ‘and cause running’(?). and they eat no food 27 Gk.a s ‘and they do not eat, but fast’; Gk.s adds ‘and cause apparitions’. and do not thirst, 28 MXY Gk.a s ‘and thirst’. and are not observed. 29 D′ ‘and do not cause offence’; Gk.a s ‘and cause offence’. 12And these spirits will rise 30 So MT1UP1 Gk.a s: all other Eth. MSS ‘will not rise’. against the sons of men and against the 31 against the: Gk.a s ‘of’. women because they came out from them. 32 from them: so Gk.a s; Eth. om. In the days 33 QD′ ‘From the days’. of slaughter and destruction

Gk.a ‘to those who sent you’.

to petition on their behalf: Gk.a om.

upon the women: so Eth., but corrupt for Gk.a ‘through the blood of the women’.

and produced…as they do: D′ Gk.a ‘as they produce flesh and blood’.

Gk.a ‘and thus beget children by them’.

that thus … on the earth: so Eth.II; Eth.I defective and corrupt, but GTUD′ are similar to Gk.a ‘that nothing might be lacking to them on the earth’.

Gk.s ‘And evil spirits they will be, the spirits which have come out’.

Gk.a ‘from their bodies’ (and so Eth. could also be translated); Gk.s ‘from the bodies of their flesh’.

and spirits … will be called: Gk.s om. together with verse 10.

of earth: Gk.a om.

So Eth.: D′ Gk.a ‘And the spirits of the giants wrong the clouds’; Gk.s ‘The spirits of the giants lay waste, do wrong’. No version is satisfactory, but it is possible that ‘clouds’ in Eth. Gk.a (‘lay waste’ in Gk.s) is a corruption of ‘the Nephilim’, viz. ‘The spirits of the giants, the Nephilim, do wrong’.

GQ Gk.a s ‘and cause corruption’ or ‘and cause destruction’.

MXY Gk.a s ‘and thirst’.

D′ ‘and do not cause offence’; Gk.a s ‘and cause offence’.

So MT1UP1 Gk.a s: all other Eth. MSS ‘will not rise’.
