Text Commentary

1And in those days Noah 1 T ‘I Noah’. saw that the earth had tilted, and that its destruction was near. 2And he 2 T ‘I’. set off from there, and went to the ends of the earth, and cried out to his 3 T ‘my’. great-grandfather Enoch; and Noah said 4 T ‘and I said’; QD′ ‘and Noah said to him’. three times in a bitter voice, Hear me, hear me, hear me! 3And he 5 GMQT1 UD′ ‘I’. said to him, Tell me what it is that is being done on the earth that the earth is so afflicted and shaken, lest I be destroyed with it. 4And immediately there was a great disturbance on the earth, and a voice was heard from heaven, and I fell upon my face. 5And my great-grandfather Enoch came and stood by me, and said to me, Why did you cry out to me with such bitter crying and weeping? 6And a command has gone out from before the Lord against those who dwell upon the dry ground that this must be their end, for they have learnt all the secrets of the angels, and all the wrongdoing of the satans, and all their secret power, and all the power 6 and all their secret power, and all the power: GTD′ ‘and all their power, the most secret secrets, and all the power’; M(?) ‘and all the power of the most secret secrets, and all the power’; QUAEHN1 ‘and all the secret power’ (QAN1 om. ‘secret’). of those who practise magic arts, and the power of enchantments, and the power 7 of enchantments and the power: BX om.; Q ‘of those who practise enchantments and the power’. of those who cast molten images for 7all the earth; and further 8 GTUD′ om. how silver is produced from the dust of 8the earth, and how soft metal occurs on the earth; for lead and tin are not 9 D′ om. produced from the earth like the former; there is a spring which produces them, and an angel who stands in it, and that angel distributes them. 9And after this my great-grandfather Enoch took hold of me with his hand, 10 GQD′ ‘by my hand’. and raised me, and said to me, Go, for I have asked the Lord of Spirits about this disturbance on the earth. 10And he said to me, Because of their iniquity their judgement has been completed, and they 11 So M: all other MSS have verb in singular. But the text appears to be corrupt and may represent a mistranslation of an original Aramaic ‘their judgement has been completed and will not be withheld before me’. will no longer be counted before me; because of the sorceries 12 sorceries: all MSS ‘months’. But the text makes little sense, and ‘months’ has commonly been taken as a mistranslation of the Hebrew and Aramaic word for ‘sorceries’. which they have searched out and learnt, the earth 13 and learnt, the earth: so GTU; MQ Eth.II ‘they have learnt that the earth’; D′ corrupt. and those who dwell upon it will be destroyed. 11And for these there will be no place of refuge for ever, for they showed to them what is secret, and they have been condemned; 14 D′ ‘for they showed what is secret to those who have been condemned’. but not so for you, 15 GQTUD′ ‘but as for you’. my son; the Lord of Spirits knows that you are pure and innocent of this reproach concerning the secrets. 12And he has established your name among the holy, and will keep you from amongst those who dwell upon the dry ground; and he has destined your offspring in righteousness 16 Eth.I ‘your righteous offspring’. to be kings 17 Q (and so probably T) ‘both for kingship’; GMUD′ corrupt. and for great honours, and from your offspring will flow out a spring of the righteous and holy without number for ever.
