Text Commentary

1And after we had been there seventy days, I had another vision 1 Lit. ‘again I saw a thing (bk: II ‘a vision’). just as I had had before. 2And I saw seven men clothed in white saying to me, Get up, put on the robe of the priesthood, and the crown of righteousness, and the breast-piece of understanding, and the mantle of truth, and the rosette of faith, and the turban of the sign, and the ephod of prophecy. 3And one by one they brought these things and put them on me and said. From now on be a priest of the Lord, you and your descendants for ever. 4And the first anointed me with holy oil and gave me a staff of judgement. 5The second washed me with pure water and fed me with bread and wine (the holiest of holy things) and arrayed me in a holy and glorious robe. 6The third clothed me with a linen vestment like an ephod. 7,8The fourth put round me a girdle like purple. The fifth gave me a branch of rich olive. 9,10The sixth put a crown on my head. The seventh put round me 2 So g eaf chi (ldm are missing): bk explicitly ‘put on my head’. a diadem of priesthood; and they filled my hands 3 This is the technical Old Testament term for consecration to the priestly office (see e.g. Exod. xxxii. 29; Judg. xvii. 5, 12; 1 Kings xiii. 33 ). with incense, so that I might serve as priest to the Lord. 11And they said to me, Levi, by three functions will your descendants be distinguished, 4 Lit. ‘into three beginnings thy seed will be divided’. Charles rendered ‘thy seed shall be divided into three offices’. for a sign of the glory of the Lord who is to come. 12And he who believed will be the first, and no office 5 Lit. ‘lot’. shall be greater than his. 6 Lit. ‘it’ or ‘he’. 13,14The second will be the priesthood. The third will be called by a new name, for a king shall arise out of Judah and establish a new priesthood, after the fashion of the Gentiles, for all the Gentiles. 15And his coming will be marvellous, as of a mighty prophet, 7 So bk: II ‘as of a prophet of the Most High’. of the stock of Abraham our father. 16Everything that is desirable in Israel shall be yours and your descendants'; and you shall eat of everything that delights the eye, and from the Lord's table shall your descendants assign themselves a portion. 17And some of them shall be high priests, and judges, and scribes; for by their testimony 8 Lit. ‘their mouth’. shall what is holy be preserved. 9 Or ‘shall the holy place be guarded’. 18And when I woke up I realized that this vision was like the other one. 19And I kept this one secret too, and I told it to nobody.
