1Eliphaz and the rest sat down beside me after this, arguing and saying many fine things against me. 2After twenty seven days they got up to go to their own country. 1 So PS: V has a much longer text in these first two verses, giving the substance of the friends arguments against Job. 3And then Elihu made them swear an oath, saying, Stay with me till I have made things plain to him, for you have spent far too many days listening patiently to Job's boasting about his righteousness. 4For my part I will not put up with it. For from the beginning I, like you, 2 Lit. ‘I also’. have kept up the lament for him, remembering his former good fortune; and he has only used it for self-glorification. High-sounding and presumptious are his words, saying, he has his throne in heaven. 5But listen to me, and I will show you that he has no portion there. 3 So PS: V ‘what his portion is’. 6Then Elihu, inspired by Satan, launched into a scurrilous attack upon me, as is recorded in the Paraleipomena of Eliphaz. 4 So the MSS. Should we read ‘Elihu’? Cp. note on xxxiii. 1.
