Of Solomon. A Psalm. Comfort for the righteous.
The right hand of the Lord sheltered me, The right hand of the Lord spared us: 2 The arm of the Lord saved us from the sword that passes through, 1 Sc. the land (cp. Ezek. xiv. 17 ). From famine and the death of sinners. 3 Evil beasts rushed upon them: With their teeth they tore their flesh, With their fangs they crushed their bones. (3) 4But from all these the Lord delivered us. (4) 5The godly 2 So Wellhausen, by an easy emendation: MSS ‘ungodly’. man was troubled on account of his errors, Lest he should be taken away along with the sinners; (5) 6For the overthrow of the sinner is terrible, But not one of these things shall touch the righteous. (6) 7For the chastening of the righteous for sins done in ignorance And the overthrow of the sinners are not alike: (7) 8The righteous is chastened with circumspection, So that the sinner may not rejoice over the righteous; (8) 9For he will admonish the righteous as a beloved son, And his chastisement is that of a firstborn; (9) 10For the Lord will spare his holy ones, And will wipe out their errors by means of discipline. 11 For the life of the just is for ever, (10) But sinners shall be taken away into destruction, And their memorial shall be found no more. (11) 12But upon the holy is the mercy of the Lord, And upon those who fear him his mercy.
