Text Commentary

1And on the next day the Chaldaean army surrounded the city; and when evening came, I, Baruch, left the people, and I went and stood by the oak. 1 Cp. lxxvii. 18. 2And I was grieving over Zion and lamenting over the captivity that had come upon the people. 3And suddenly a powerful spirit 2 Or ‘a strong wind’. lifted me up and carried me over the wall of Jerusalem. 4And I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the city, each of them holding a fiery torch in his hands. 5And another angel began to descend from heaven; and he said to them, Keep hold of your lamps, and do not light them till I tell you. 6For I am sent first to speak a word to the earth and to put in it what the Lord, the Most High, has commanded me. 7And I saw him descend into the Holy of Holies, and take from it the veil, and the holy ark, 3 Text ‘ephod’. and its cover, and the two tablets, and the holy vestments of the priests, and the altar of incense, and the forty-eight precious stones with which the priest was adorned, and all the vessels of the tabernacle. 8And he cried to the earth in a loud voice,

Earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the mighty God, And receive what I commit to you. And guard them until the last times, So that, when you are ordered, you may restore them, And strangers may not get possession of them. 9 For the time has come when Jerusalem also will be delivered for a time, Until it is said that it shall be restored again for ever.

10And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up.
