1And he answered and said to me, That time will be divided into twelve separate periods, 1 Lit. ‘twelve parts’ (and similarly subsequently). and each one of them will have its own special characteristics. 2 Lit. ‘each one of them is reserved for that which is appointed for it’. 2The first period will see the beginning of the troubles. 3In the second period will occur assassinations of the great ones of the earth. 4In the third period the annihilation of many by death. 5,6In the fourth period destruction by the sword. 3 Lit. ‘the sending of the sword’. In the fifth period famine and lack of rain. 4 Lit. ‘withholding of rain’. 7In the sixth period earthquakes and terrors … 5 ‘In the seventh period …’ is omitted in the MS. 8,9In the eighth period the appearance of many spectres and attacks by demons. 10In the ninth period the falling of fire from heaven. 11In the tenth period every kind of havoc and oppression. 12In the eleventh period much wickedness and impurity. 13And in the twelfth period chaos resulting from the mixing together of all these things. 14For although each of the periods of that time will be marked off from the rest by its special characteristics, they will ultimately all be mixed together and reinforce one another. 6 Charles thought verses 14 and 15 not only ‘obscure’ but also ‘possibly corrupt’. He translated ‘For † these parts of that time are reserved, and † shall be mingled one with another and minister one to another. For some shall leave out some of their own, and receive in its stead from others, and some complete their own and that of others, so that those.…’. 15For some will fall short 7 Sense required by the context: text ‘increase’. in the calamities they bring and have their deficiency made up by others, while some will supply their full tale themselves and also make up for what is lacking in others, so that those on earth in those days may not understand that this is the final consummation.
