Text Commentary

1And the bright fourth waters that you saw represent the coming of Moses and Aaron and Miriam and Joshua, the son of Nun, and Caleb and all those like them. 2For at that time the lamp of the eternal law shone on all those in darkness, giving to believers the promise of their reward, and warning unbelievers about the torment of fire reserved for them. 3At that time, too, the heavens shook, and what was beneath the throne of the Mighty One trembled, when he was taking Moses to himself. 4For he showed him many other things together with the ordinances of the law 1 Text ‘laws … time’. – the consummation of the times 1 Text ‘laws … time’. (just as he has also shown you), and similarly the pattern of Zion and its dimensions, as it was to be constructed, and the pattern of the sanctuary, as it now is. 5Then he showed him also the dimensions of the fire, the depths of the abyss, the weight of 6the winds, and the number of the drops of rain; and the mastery of 7anger, the dignity 2 Lit. ‘abundance’. of patience, and the truth of judgement; and the root of wisdom, the riches of understanding, and the fount of 8knowledge; and the height of the air, the extent of Paradise, the consummation of the ages, and the beginning of the day of judgement; 9and the number of the offerings, and the countries which 10were as yet unknown; 3 Lit. ‘and the earths (i.e. ‘lands’) which had not yet come’. and the mouth of Gehenna, the abode of 11vengeance, the home of faith, and the dwelling-place of hope; and the vision of the future torment, the throng of innumerable angels, the flaming hosts, the splendour of the lightning, the sound of the thunder, the orders of the archangels, 4 Text ‘chief (sing.) of the angels’. the treasuries of light, the changes of the seasons, 5 Lit. ‘times’. and the careful study of the law. 12These are the bright fourth waters that you saw.
