Text Commentary

1Christ said to him, Enough, Sedrach. How long will you shed tears and moan? Paradise has been opened for you, and by dying you will live. 2Sedrach said to him, Yet once again will I speak to thee, Lord. How long have I to live before I die? Do not refuse me my request. 3,4The Lord said to him, Speak, Sedrach. 〈Sedrach said,〉 If a man lives eighty 〈or〉 ninety years, or even a hundred, and lives them as a sinner, 1 Lit. ‘lives them in sins’. and then turns again and lives in penitence, for how many days must he have lived in penitence before thou dost forgive his sins? 5God said to him, If a man lives a hundred 〈or〉 eighty years, and then turns and repents for three years and has fruits of righteousness to show, and then death overtakes him, I will not remember any of his sins. 2 Lit. ‘all his sins’.

Notes:

1 Lit. ‘lives them in sins’.

2 Lit. ‘all his sins’.
