Various issues relating to the writing, canonization, transmission, and interpretation of the Hebrew Bible in ancient Judaism are dealt with in Mulder (1988). A general historical introduction to ancient Judaism in Hellenistic and Roman times is provided by Schäfer (1995). Goodman (2000) and Schwartz (2001) are more specific studies of Jewish society under Roman rule. For a concise and historically informed introduction to rabbinic literature, see Stemberger (1996). Other introductory works on ancient Judaism which provide a broad overview for the student and non-specialist alike are Cohen (1987) and Schiffman (1991). The social structure of the rabbinic movement in Roman Palestine has been analysed by Hezser (1997), while Jewish communities in the Diaspora are the subject of Rutgers' (1995 and 1998) and Barclay's (1996) works. The literary form midrash has been introduced by Porton (1979), and Boyarin (1990) and Stern (1996) have studied its characteristics on the basis of post- modern literary theories. A comparison between rabbinic and Christian exegesis is to be found in Visotzky (1995), while the Graeco-Roman context of ancient Judaism in general, and rabbinic literature in particular, is elucidated in the articles collected in Goodman (1998), Schäfer (1998 and 2002) and Schäfer and Hezser (2000).
