The Oxford Handbook of Biblical Studies Provides a comprehensive survey of Biblical scholarship in a variety of disciplines.

Conclusion

Genre is central to the interpretation of the gospels, as much as to any other form of communication. The scholarly consensus about the unique nature of the gospels which prevailed for much of the twentieth century has come under severe scrutiny in recent decades, as arguments for the biographical genre of the gospels have become part of a new consensus. Out of these debates, a number of areas for further study have arisen, especially concerning the Christological implications of the biographical genre of the gospels, as well as for their literary relationships, their setting within Graeco-Roman society, and their relationship to Jewish literature, especially the rabbinic material. These areas are now likely to be the focus for further research about the implications and consequences of the biographical genre of the gospels.
