A communal lament, with wisdom motifs (vv. 8–13 ), framed by themes of divine vengeance and retribution.

1–2 :

The vengeance of God is his commitment to overcome and punish evil (Ps 99.8 ). Shine forth, the language of theophany (Ps 50.2; 80.1 ). Judge of the earth, Gen 18.25 .

3–7 :

The psalmist is troubled by the good fortune of the wicked, who believe that God is inactive (Ps 73.3–12 ).

8–11 :

The psalmist addresses the morally obtuse (fools), assuring them that God is attentive.

12 :

Discipline is a typical biblical form of instruction, especially in Proverbs (e.g., Prov 13.24 ).

17–18 :

On the brink of death, the psalmist is sustained by divine love (Ps 21.7; 66.9 ).

21 :

The wicked are guilty of judicial murder, the condemnation of the innocent (e.g., 1 Kings 21.8–14 ).

23 :

Retribution: The wicked will be destroyed.
