My child, the sage's typical address to a student (Prov 1.8,10,15; 4.10 ). Testing by God is a common theme in Sirach and elsewhere in the Bible ( 4.17; 6.20–21; 44.20; Gen 22.1; Ex 16.4; Judg 2.22; Job 7.18; Isa 48.10 ).
