Gethsemane

Source:
The Oxford Companion to the Bible What is This? Provides authoritative interpretive entries on Biblical people, places, beliefs, events, and secular influences.

    Gethsemane

(Map 9). The name of the place in Jerusalem where, according to Matthew 26.36 and Mark 14.32, Jesus was arrested. John does not name it but calls it a garden (18.1). This fits the name's meaning, “oil‐press,” as does its location on the lower slopes of the Mount of Olives, in the general vicinity of the several churches there today.
