A son of Leah and Jacob and one of the twelve tribes of Israel. The name combines Hebrew words for “man” and “wages”; hence Leah's exclamation “God has given me my hire” (Gen. 30.18). The territory allotted to Issachar (Josh. 17.10; 19.17–23) lies in the plain of Jezreel (Map 3:X3). References to Issachar suggest close associations between it and Zebulun (Gen. 49.13–14; Deut. 33.18). Issachar, the probable home of Deborah, played an essential role in her campaign against Sisera (Judg. 5.15). The territory of Issachar was conquered by the Assyrians in 732 BCE.
