An Ephraimite (Num. 13: 16) designated as Moses' successor (Num. 27: 18–23), who is therefore the leader of the invading tribes as they enter Canaan, and commissioned by God himself (Deut. 31: 14–23). Joshua is written up in the narratives as one who through his obedience to God was highly successful in his undertakings. ‘Joshua’ becomes ‘Jesus’ in Greek—hence the misleading Heb. 4: 8 in AV.
