    joy

In the Bible, more than an emotion. It combines a sense of happiness with a state of blessedness. But in the OT it is marked by public excitement at times of festival (Deut. 12: 6 f.) and by relief when an individual had a grievance which he could bring to the Temple for settlement (Ps. 43: 4). In the NT the note of joy is prominent in Luke's gospel (2: 10; 19: 37) and in the Acts (13: 52), where it is a characteristic gift of the spirit (Acts 8: 39; Gal. 5: 22).
