A sarcastic reference (Isa. 14: 12) to the king of Babylon calls him the Light‐Bearer, or the Day Star (NRSV), or Venus, ‘fallen from heaven’, i.e. from his lofty power, and is translated Lucifer by the Vulgate and AV. Because the verse is partly quoted by Jesus (Luke 10: 18) with reference to Satan, Lucifer has since the time of Jerome been identified with Satan.
