In Greek mythology a giant and a huntsman who was killed by the goddess Artemis and then placed amongst the stars with a girdle, a sword, a lion's skin, and a club, according to Homer. Amos (5: 8) and Job (9: 9) refer to the creation of this constellation of seven stars shaped, it was held, like a man with a narrow waist, and in Job 38: 31 God asks whether a mere man can loose Orion's girdle and so usher in the winter season (Job 38: 29–31).
