In OT times there were professional healers in Palestine but they were not well regarded (Job 13: 4), even in the 1st cent. CE (Mark 5: 26). But Ecclus. [= Sir.] 38: 1 ff. urged respect for their services, so that it was not sarcastic to call Luke a ‘beloved physician’ in Col. 4: 14, and Luke has traditionally been held to be the author of the third gospel and the Acts.
