Wife of the patriarch Isaac and mother of Jacob and Esau, her twins born after twenty years of marriage. She contrived to get Jacob, her favourite, to receive the dying Isaac's blessing at the expense of the first-born Esau (Gen. 25: 20–26; 27); this seems to be a legend from oral tradition told to explain the historical relationship of the Edomites (descendants of Esau) to the Israelites: they were an older nation, related to the Hebrews and settled on their southern border, and often in conflict.
