Israelite soldiers were equipped with shields and spears (2 Chron. 14: 8), helmets (2 Chron. 26: 14), and coats of mail if they rode in chariots (Jer. 46: 4). Jews engaged in rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem under Nehemiah also had coats of mail on account of the hostility of neighbouring Arabs. Pieces of armour are used metaphorically as equipment in Christian warfare against the powers of evil (Eph. 6: 11 ff.).
