    abomination

Frequently in AV, and sometimes in NRSV, it describes an action or article incompatible with the true religion of Israel, as in Lev. 7: 18, or 1 Kgs. 11: 5 where REB prefers ‘loathsome god’. In Deut. 27: 15 the word is rendered ‘anything abhorrent to the Lord’ by NRSV and ‘anything abominable to the Lord’ by REB and ‘a thing detestable to Yahweh’ by NJB. So the word embraces foreign gods, improper behaviour, and unclean foods.
