Both wild (Job 39: 5–8) and tamed (Deut. 22: 10) were known BCE; Jesus rode on a female ass (Matt. 21: 2), which the evangelist regards as a fulfilment of Zech. 9: 9. Mark 11: 2 reports that no one had ridden on this animal before. This was a precaution taken by kings, which Mark may have been aware of. But the whole episode does not feature in the trial proceedings, unless it is alluded to in John 19: 12.
