Son of Jacob and Leah (Gen. 29: 33), and regarded as founder and ancestor of the tribe Simeon which united with Judah at the time of the conquest of Canaan (Judg. 1: 3–17) but was regarded by the Chronciler as part of the northern kingdom (2 Chron. 15: 9).

An elderly man who took the infant Jesus into his arms in the Temple (Luke 2: 25–35) and praised God that he had seen salvation brought to Israel.
