One of the sons of Eliphaz, a son of Esau, regarded as ancestor of the Edomites (Gen. 36: 11). The tribe was sufficiently important to stand for the whole of Edom (Amos 1: 12), though it apparently occupied only the northern section of the country (Ezek. 25: 13). Its inhabitants had a reputation for wisdom (Jer. 49: 7; Job 2: 11).
