    Augustus

The title, meaning ‘revered’, granted to Octavian when he became ruler of the empire in 27 BCE. He was therefore the emperor at the time of Jesus' birth. He initiated the process by which the Roman emperor was accorded deification; he closely associated his own imperial majesty with the State.
