Although not easy to differentiate the terms ‘village’, ‘town’, and ‘city’ in the Bible (Bethlehem is both a city in Luke 2: 4 and a village in John 7: 42), a village perhaps resembled a hamlet or satellite grouping adjacent to an enclosed city. Thus the word translated ‘dependencies’ (NRSV) at Josh. 15: 45 is in Hebrew ‘daughters’, indicating the dependence of the outlying villages on the mother city.
