Calling. The modern usage of a vocation to a profession is not found in the NT, though it was developed in the 16th cent. by Luther and Calvin as part of their assault on Catholicism, which had regarded vocation as primarily a call to enter a religious order. In the NT people are called to a new life in Christ (1 Cor. 1: 26) and apostles have a vocation to encourage them (1 Cor. 1: 1).
