Payment for labour in Israel was made at the end of each day (Deut. 24: 14), or year (Isa. 21: 16), to shepherds (Gen. 29: 15), nurses (Exod. 2: 9), prophets (Neh. 6: 10–13), and craftsmen (Isa. 46: 6). The amounts are not normally mentioned, but according to Jesus' parable an employee contracted with an employer in a vineyard for a denarius a day (Matt. 20: 2).
