    wine

In the OT wine, fermented grape juice, is associated with festivals and occasions of joy, and with covenants. It also symbolizes blood, being derived from the red juice of crushed grapes (Isa. 63: 2). Similarly, in the NT new wine (Matt. 9: 17) stands for the new covenant or new faith which cannot be contained within the framework of the old. And at Cana the significance for the evangelist of his account of Jesus changing a great quantity of water into wine (John 2: 6–10) is an indication of the liberating joy of the Gospel for all mankind. Wine was used at the Lord's Supper when Jesus inaugurated the new covenant in his blood (Mark 14: 24), and it has subsequently been used at the Christian Eucharist or Communion (1 Cor. 11: 25).
