From beginning (Gen. 4: 23–4) to end (Rev. 20: 8) the Bible is a story of conflict, largely because Israel was situated between great powers to the north and south who therefore tended to clash on Israelite soil. God is himself frequently portrayed as a warrior, as in the Song of Deborah (Judg. 5: 4) and the psalms (e.g. Ps. 24: 8). Paul compares the Christian life to a battle (1 Cor. 14: 8; 2 Cor. 10: 4).
