An adjective applied both to children (1 Cor. 4: 17) and to adult Christians (1 Pet. 2: 11) and even to Christ (Eph. 1: 6, though there the Greek uses the perfect passive participle of the verb as a noun). The ‘Beloved Disciple’ is mentioned in the gospel of John as especially close to Jesus (13: 23–5) and as the author of the gospel (21: 24). He has traditionally been regarded as John the disciple, but the identification is not made in the gospel.
