A Dictionary of the Bible What is This? Contains accessibly written entries for topics covering the religious, historical, and social aspects of the Bible.

    Caesarea

Built on the coast by Herod the Great in honour of Caesar Augustus; it became the official residence of Roman prefects. Its inhabitants were both Jews and Gentiles, and the Christian way was brought there by Philip (Acts 8: 40; 21: 8). Peter became aware of the equality of Jews and Gentiles in the Church by being summoned to Caesarea by Cornelius, a centurion and a Gentile Godā€fearer. Paul was taken to Caesarea for trial (Acts 23: 23).
