A title in the Bible for military officers of varying duties and ranks, sometimes translated ‘commander’ or even ‘comptroller’ (1 Kgs. 16: 9, REB). In Acts 4: 1, there is a captain of the Temple (NRSV) who may have been in charge of the Temple police. ‘The captain of our salvation’ (Heb. 2: 10, AV) is better translated ‘pioneer of their salvation’ (REB, NRSV) or ‘leader of their salvation’ (NJB).
