Although often used, especially in 1 Cor. 13, by the AV to translate the Greek agape, modern English translations have rejected it on the ground that it has now been appropriated for the more limited reference to almsgiving. Agape means disinterested ‘love’ which is a fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5: 22). When used of God in relation to mankind, AV too translates agape by ‘love’ (1 John 3: 1).
