Island in the eastern Mediterranean. The name comes from a Greek word meaning ‘copper’, for which the island was famous. It is known as Elishah in OT (Ezek. 27: 7). Cyprus was conquered by the Assyrians in the 8th cent. BCE and later by the Greeks and Romans. There were Jewish congregations (Acts 13: 5) who were visited by Paul and Barnabas (himself a Cypriot), and later by Barnabas and Mark (Acts 15: 39).
