    Dan

One of the sons of Jacob and held to be the ancestor of one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Samson belonged to this tribe (Judg. 13: 2, 24). The tribe migrated to the north and rebuilt the city of Laish (Judg. 18: 29), which they had destroyed, and renamed it Dan, which became the most northerly place in the kingdom. It was the site of one of the two national shrines established by King Jeroboam I of Israel (1 Kgs. 12: 29–30).
