One of the sons of Jacob and held to be the ancestor of one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Samson belonged to this tribe (Judg. 13: 2, 24). The tribe migrated to the north and rebuilt the city of Laish (Judg. 18: 29), which they had destroyed, and renamed it Dan, which became the most northerly place in the kingdom.
