An area in southern Mesopotamia where Adam and Eve were placed according to the myth of Gen. 2. It contained two fruit trees which were given special significanceā€”one bestowing everlasting life (Gen. 3: 22) and the other an awareness of good and evil. The garden of Eden came to be thought of as paradise, before the Fall; and after the Exile in Babylon the land of the Return was pictured romantically as a new Eden (Isa. 51: 3).
