A carefully selected basis for building (Matt. 7: 25); also a metaphor for such a basis (Heb. 11: 10). Apostles are the foundation of New Jerusalem (Rev. 21: 14); and in 1 Cor. 3: 10 Paul's preaching of the gospel is said to be the foundation of the Church—though this is corrected somewhat in the following verse: the foundation is Jesus Christ himself.
